In short
A DATEV or BMD export is a file of finished bookings — account, contra account, amount, tax code, document date and document number — that a tax adviser imports into their accounting software instead of re-entering documents. DATEV uses the DATEV format (booking batch as an EXTF file), BMD NTCS its own booking import.
· General information, not tax advice.
The DATEV format is a DATEV eG standard for importing and exporting master data and bookings in DATEV's accounting programs; other software vendors can use it for data exchange. A booking batch is a CSV file: the first line is a header with format and client details, the second holds the column names, and each further line is one booking with fields such as amount, debit/credit indicator, account, contra account, tax key, document date, document reference and booking text. Files from other systems start with EXTF_, files exported by DATEV itself with DTVF_.
BMD NTCS can import bookings from other programs such as cash registers, web shops or invoicing software, optionally together with the documents. The bookings are either posted directly or first placed in pre-entry (Vorerfassung), where the firm reviews them. It is best to agree on the expected columns and tax codes with the firm in advance.
For a smooth hand-over, what counts most is a matching chart of accounts (in Austria based on the EKR), a clear tax code per booking, document number and date, and a closed period. If any of this is missing, the firm has to ask or rework.
In May 2026 DATEV announced that it will no longer offer services developed specifically for Austria: the current portfolio can be used until 31 December 2028, some programs can still be used free of charge in 2029, and use beyond 31 December 2029 is not possible. Anyone in Austria working with DATEV programs will therefore need another solution from 2030 at the latest.
In Saldek
Saldek exports posted bookings as a DATEV booking batch and as a BMD import file — from the Business plan and during the trial. You can invite your tax adviser with their own role so they can create the export themselves.
Questions about this term
What is an EXTF file?
A CSV file in the DATEV format created by a program other than DATEV. DATEV's accounting software imports it as a booking batch, for example via batch processing. Files exported by DATEV itself start with DTVF_.
Do tax advisers in Austria use DATEV or BMD?
Both occur; ask your firm which file it needs. According to DATEV, its Austrian programs can be used until the end of 2028, some of them in 2029, and not after that.
Which accounts appear in the export?
The accounts of your bookkeeping. If the firm uses a different chart of accounts, it maps the accounts during import — or you agree on the chart in advance.
From which plan is the export available in Saldek?
The DATEV and BMD export is included from the Business plan and available during the trial.
